: the contact stated while driving 30 mph the engine stalled and the vehicle lost all power. The vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection. Upon inspection it was determined the baffle under the oil cap broke off. As a result metal pieces went into the timing chain, causing the engine to seize. The engine was replaced. Updated 3/20/2006 - the consumer was able to locate a TSB which referenced this problem.
Two days ago my car was driving perfectly on the highway. The oil pressure light turned on I turned off the highway immediately and put more oil in the car. At this point my car is consuming over a quart every week and I don't drive more than a couple of hundred miles every week. I've taken several longer trips with this car. I started the car back up after checking the oil level, started driving and the light didn't come back on. About 10 more miles down the road on the highway the oil pressure light the check engine light vsc light the four-wheel drive light appear. I go to an autozone and I get a code p0012. I've done lots of research and I've learned that this is all related to Toyota's well-known defective design and manufacturing of their engines. I have a 2az fe engine. I bought this car with 125,000 miles on it in 2020. It now has about 154,000 mi on it. I didn't know that the oil consumption was extreme until this point of research. Now my car is making a rattling sound most likely the engine needs to be replaced. Technically yes I can drive it but it will stall and probably light on fire if I do and this is dangerous. They had a TSB warranty extension in 2016 I believe. I did not own the car that time nor do I know if that car was even subjected to the extension notice. But it is well known engine can do this and the pistons fail around this mileage that my car has. It's out of warranty but I'm reading everywhere people having problems with this year's car and the other cars with this engine right now. There's a whole group of engines that are starting to fail because of these poorly designed pistons that can affect oil leakage. Not only wasting a precious resource but causing a very dangerous situation for drivers. This should be addressed by Toyota still I want them to fix my engine or replace it before I cause an accident that can lead to death. I'm choosing to not drive it right now but I don't have the luxury of a second car. I may have to drive it.
This car has been maintained and preserved and only 84000 miles on it. And the car wont shift. It jolts me or revs extremely high and also almost caused me an accident as it almost shut down on power while making a left turn in intersection. The check engine light comes on and off. It's only while going from 2nd to 3rd or shifting down from 2 to 1st. I had my mechanic look at it and he said it's a common issue with the ecu to take it to dealership to replace for free and they want to charge me 150 just to examine it.
2006 Toyota Rav4 with 2. 4 liter engine burning oil rapidly. Burning approximately 4 quarts of oil in 3,000 miles. Vehicle currently has 100,000 miles. Issue persists even though I maintain routine maintenance on the vehicle. Luckily no safety hazards have occurred yet, but there is a high risk for potential safety hazard. Vehicle has been inspected by 3 different mechanics. I have been told by 3 different mechanics that this is a common issue for cars with this year/engine. About 2,800 miles after high synthetic oil change the vehicle begins to sound like it is struggling to accelerate at low speeds and the check engine oil light will briefly turn on at random then go away. Light does not stay lit or continuously flicker.
dt: the consumer stated that the engine light kept illuminating in the 2001 toyota rav 4. the vehicle was taken to the dealership three times. the first time they reprogrammed the computer, the second time they replaced the oxygen sensors and the third time they determined that the catalytic converter needed to be replaced. the consumer planned to replace the catalytic converter in the future. currently the contact was driving the vehicle with the engine light on. the vehicle was not driving differently. the consumer contacted toyota and they urged the consumer to work with the dealer, and maybe they would help her with the cost. *ak (11/21/05) the consumer was aware of other same make model and years that have experienced this same problem. *sc
oil was changed regularly on the car. oil and engine light came on but mechanic could not find a problem and stated there was plenty of oil in the car. driving on the expressway. the engine, then oil lights came on, as i pulled over there was a loud noise, and every thing froze. i was told the engine had seized and it would have to be replaced (for $6000). *nm
on tuesday, january 24, 2006 while driving from rhode island, the oil light came on - immediately i pulled over to the next exit to a gas station. i put one quart of oil in the engine because that is all it stated it needed. at which time the oil light went off. i continued to drive for approximately five minutes and the oil light came on - then the engine light came on. after a few minutes a clicking sound started - so immediately pulled over to the side of the road and turned the engine off. i tried to start the engine again - however it would not turn over. i immediately contacted aaa to have the car towed. the car was towed from rhode island to north cary auto. the mechanic tried started the car and immediately stated that the engine was no good. i asked him to check the car over to make sure this was the case. he stated that after checking the car - he didn't understand why the oil light came on because the car had plenty of oil. i immediately contacted ira toyota and the toyota corporate office at which time they informed me that the car needed to be brought in to a toyota dealer to take a look at it. on february 2 at approximately 3:45 p.m. i received a call from charlene to inform me that it would take $10,000 to repair the car because the engine was gone. she stated that a rod broke and went up into engine which caused it to shut down. i asked to speak to her manager, cathy kitik, who also informed me that there was "gunk" in the engine. at which time i informed her that it was sludge and it is known that toyota has had a problem with the v4 and v6 engines. she stated that it never occurred in the toyota rav 4. at which time i asked her "is it a toyota engine" and she confirmed that it was. she also confirmed that a rod broke and went into the engine which caused it to shut down. i informed her that i had receipts which showed the oil was changed appropriately. *nm
check engine light came on intermittently. dealer said nylon gear on camshaft had damaged teeth, allowing timing chain to jump back and forth, and thereby changing ignition timing. cost of repair was $1,600. *jb
i have a 2001 toyota rav4 [xxx] the engine type is a 1azfe. i recently learned about a toyota oil gel problem with engine type 5s-fe. the motor may be different, but my story is the same. this is a work vehicle that was maintained. in sept 2006 i called toyota to complain about the $2800 repair due to what they had called "oil gel". the reference number for this call is [xxx]. at the time i was unaware of the law suit in process for some toyota engines due to this exact thing! jan 19th 2007, while driving, my car's engine light went on and 30 seconds later there was a plume of blue smoke ( the bartow fire department was called as i was on i-75 in georgia and someone thought the car was on fire). there was no fire, just smoke. i pulled over immediately. the car was towed to the service dealership where they told me i had thrown a rod. they claim the two are unrelated occurrences. from what i have read on web sites, they seem very related to me. the repair in sept was costly, to have the rod thrown 4 months later makes me think the 1azfe engine may have some defect as well. the car could not be repaired without a totally new engine. we chose not to repair it. i believe toyota should pay for the repairs in sept 06 and the tow in jan 07, as i am convinced this is a defect. i can provide all the oil changes and maintenance records as this has been a work vehicle for me. i wonder if other toyota engines should be examined and reported. the dealership and toyota have both claimed this engine is not involved. i disagree. had i not pulled over i am certain a fire would have begun with all the engine oil on the motor. *nm updated 07/11/2012 *js information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)
tl*the contact owns a 2003 toyota rav4. while driving 60 mph, the oil indicator light illuminated and the engine stalled. the vehicle would not restart and was towed to the dealer. the dealer stated that the engine failed and needed to be replaced. the failure was due to the lack of oil in the engine, although oil had been placed in the vehicle a week before. the engine was previously replaced in july of 2006 due to the same failure. the vin, engine size, and number of cylinders were unknown. the failure mileage was 68,000 and current mileage was 92,000.
