september 29, 2014 toyota motors informed nhtsa of plans to conduct a voluntary recall of the toyota pre-runner pickup trucks. the problem is that the leaf spring is defective and could fracture due to corrosion and stress. i have a leaf spring that is not fractured or cracked but is making a lot of strange noises and my mechanic says the leaf spring on one side is defective. i have taken it to my dealer twice and they refuse to replace it because it is not cracked. i have called toyota customer service twice also and they refuse to rectify the problem. how long is it going to take toyota to deal with this recall or are they waiting for a few people to die. why can't they be proactive instead of reactive after people are injured.

Hitachi shocks can't handle dampening requirements causing the tires to lose contact with the roadway - reducing traction, braking ability, and stability. My 10 year old son can collapse the shock with 1 hand - never mind a vehicle that weighs 4,000+ lbs. If there is any type of load - when hitting a bump the truck bounces down the road - where you must be extremely careful to keep the truck tracking straight. This is most severe on the highway. None of the vehicles we have owned in the past 30 years exhibited this severe suspension short fall. The only time you may experience this is after something in the suspension has failed or worn out. Not on a vehicle with under 30k miles on it.

After shifting into reverse from park and start backing up there is a clunk noise from under the the vehicle and clunk happens again once you brake in reverse. Vehicle inconsistently shifts while driving at normal city speed limits.

When I go to accelerate at low speed my vehicle shudders shakes and vibrates, no engine lights or codes have popped up, the issue is somewhere from transmission to the rear end. Im guessing transmission or torque converter. With my vehicle only having 136,000 miles and is well taken care of this is ridiculous, I have checked drive line and tires and everything seems to be working as it should so it has to be something internal.

Started noticing vibration on smooth roads a few weeks ago, as if tires were misaligned. Independent service center was able to reproduce the problem and found both rear shocks were cracked, with fluid leaking. Vehicle has not been inspected by anyone else, has not been repaired yet (but parts are being ordered), and is available for inspection. No warning lamps or messages appeared. This vehicle has not been driven off-road, only on smooth roads and highways.

Truck frame, welds, seams, control arms, calipers, ball joints etc. . . . All have significant rust. The drivers side rear fender to frame support has completely rusted through. I am stunned by the amount of rust underneath this vehicle. There are several areas close to perforating but no holes. Toyota inspected my frame last week and said it was "fine" and to schedule the crc treatment. The alloy rims are also severely pitted and bubbled due to rust. There is not a component underneath this truck which does not have significant rust . I live in nys and wash under the truck weekly in the winter. I have used fluid film, rust converter and por-15 to try to keep the rust away. Why is my 6 year old truck rusting faster/more than any of my other cars. This has to be a manufacturing defect.

I am concerned that the label on my truck which contains information about the weight load bearing is wrong, because both leaf springs on my truck broke and I wasn't carrying a heavy load, or more than what is recommended. How do I pursue a dispute with a recall? truck was in motion on a dirt road when I was hauling an atv and I noticed that my bed looked off balance.

no known events leading to the failure. progressive, successive failure of bolts holding left front wheel assembly and suspension arm to the truck. this caused separation of mentioned member from the vehicle resulting in total loss of control and overturning of said vehicle. the vehicle was a total loss as a result of the incident.*ak

problem: defective rear leaf springs. on 4/27/05 had right rear leaf spring replaced, mileage on veh. 51261 on 7/18/06 had left rear leaf spring replaced, mileage on veh. 56,586 both leaf springs needed replacement because they rusted so badly that the steel bands which held them together broke. i was driving on an interstate hwy each time a leaf spring broke. i was very lucky that one of the leafs didn't swing into the rear wheels, if so it would have caused a serious accident. i purchased the veh. new, i'm the sole driver, it's used solely for transportation , never used for construction or off road purposes. i believe toyota used very poor quality steel in making these leaf springs & bands or a poor heat treating process to strengthen the steel or both. thanking you in advance for your time & consideration on this matter. p.s.toyota did replace the first leaf spring as a goodwill gesture, but didn't replace the second one. *tr

the truck began to make a loud banging sound from the rear of the vehicle. i found the left (drivers side) leaf spring had broken and then twisted and wedged underneath the skidplate to the gas tank. i had to use a chisel to get the broken spring out from under the gas tank. *jb
