The contact took the vehicle to a certified mechanic who diagnosed that the brake axle and sway weldings failed, and the lower control arm fractured. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer who informed the contact that the vehicle's repairs were not covered under warranty. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 187,000.

the right rear brake failed with only 15,589 miles. car is only 3 years old. there was no bad consequences due to this failure. dealer replaced brake, rotor, and pads, but said problem was due to not driving car enough. he conveyed that mileage was too low for 3-year old car. i don't think so.

re: 2002 nissan altima se. since approximately 3 years ago, i have been having problems with my brakes. i live in the ne where it gets cold in the winters, and only have this problem when the temp. is approx. below 30 degrees. this problem has typically occurred when the car has sat idle all night, but has also happened at other times when it hasn't been driven for a few hours. when first starting the car, the brake pedal is so stiff that i can't press it all the way to the floor - almost like it is frozen. luckily, i have not yet had an accident, but have narrowly avoided one several times while backing out of my driveway without being able to slow down, coming to a stop sign or parking lot exit and not being able to stop, or trying to slow down to turn a corner. i have to try to remember to pump the brake pedal 10 - 15 times every time i start the car in cold weather, as this is the only way to "loosen" it up so that it will work correctly. several mechanics have told me they have no idea what causes this. when i'm driving this car, i'm always afraid that the brakes will totally give out. *tr

every winter or when the weather gets cold there is a strong smell of raw gas coming in through the air vents, when car warms up in morning even with all windows open smell is choking and unbearable. also brakes squeak terribly like a big truck when turning to left and braking, even at slow speeds, such as in a drive thru or parking. even brand new brakes. lastly and most scary is the driver seat shifts, rocks, forward and back when braking hard or during a sudden stop. purchased car in 2007 as a lease return. *tr

each winter since i purchased the car, during cold weather, when car is first started, brakes do not work. it is like they are frozen and the brake pedal will not depress unless forced. once i get the pedal to go down, the pedal must be pumped numerous times to get them to work. once car is warmed, they will work. this is a 3.5 se model. the dealership cannot locate any problem. *tr

when temperature drops below 32 degrees, when care is first started power brakes do not work until care warms up, taking care to dealer they said this is normal and you have to wait for car to warm up because of a check valve on brake booster having moisture inside. *tr

i had the vehicle reviewed on april 23, 2013 with your elhart michigan nissan service department. i can't tell you how disappointed i am. i was told that the rear brakes pins and slides had no lubrication in them when my wife personally watched the mechanic lubricate them when the most recent pads were installed 2 weeks ago. one of the pins is an aftermarket because the existing one was frozen at the servicing and needed to be replaced. i questioned the nissan shop manager who called me regarding the recommendation of the owners manual for maintenance of this particular area of the vehicle and he indicated that it is not mentioned. i am now in my words "stuck" with a safety part of my car which i must watch religiously and i can expect to spend $1000's of dollars in parts and maintenance. this car did not yet have 60,000 miles on it and has already gone through all 4 rotors 2 sets of front pads and 4 sets of rear pads. my ford vehicle has 240,000 miles and is on its 3rd set of pads and second set of front rotors. i cannot believe that a prestigious brand of nissan is expecting their customers to swallow this. yes, i am also one of those customers where you replaced my engine at 11,000 miles because of excessive engine oil usage. i know that design and manufacturing mistakes occur, its how the manufacturer responds to the mistakes that determine the difference in obtaining customer loyalty. i will be contacting the cnn consumer site to report this as the internet is full of similar complaints where the owners are being told that it is their fault. *tr
