The contact owns a 2005 Toyota Prius. While the vehicle was stationary, the brake lights malfunctioned. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 130,000.
The brake light went out on the driver side. Luckily I was pulled over by a police officer who was courteous to let me know the rear driver-side brake light was out. I believe this a hazard that Toyota has failed to correct because the led brake light bulbs are not repairable/replaceable, an since the led had failed and the driver-side taillight assembly is now useless and non-fuctional. I went to the Toyota dealer and they quoted my 800 dollars to replace the taillight including labor. I don't like how the led brake light is intended for over 100,000 hours of life but hadn't lasted more than four and a half years of use. And the worst part of the situation is that the led bulbs are not replaceable/repairable and thus a greater difficulty to repair and bring back to safe operating condition.
Both headlights will flicker and go out, mostly at different times than the other but can happen at the same time. By turning the headlight switch off, then back on after 10 to 15 seconds they will come back on. Driving on the freeway this leaves you in a very dangerous situation. Thank god for fog lights, a life saver at 70 miles an hour. This can also happen sitting in my driveway before leaving for work.
The headlight on the passenger side just turns off for no reason. I saw it off when stopped. It has done it several times after about a half hour of driving. It goes back on, but I keep the fog lights on just in case it happens in the dark. I think it could effect both head lights and cause a safety problem at night. I drive on unlit streets at night.
The fog lights on my 2005 Toyota Prius are cracked. They do not appear to be from any impact. Upon investigating further, it seems that a great deal of Prius owners are experiencing this problem when there are severe cold temperatures.
Since September of 2014 I have had issues with the dashboard lights. They have become dimmer and dimmer. Then during the week of 8/24/15, I started my car and the dashboard lights came on, but when I turned on the headlights, all dashboard lights went black. I had turn signal lights, but nothing else unless I turned off the headlights. This was extremely dangerous as I was driving home after dark. I had no idea how fast I was going, what gear I was in, if I had enough gas to get home, etc. , etc. The next morning I took a 20-mile drive and when I stopped, I could not get the car to shut off by pushing the ignition button. I tried multiple times and the engine finally turned off, but the display panel was still dimly lit. I then drove directly to the dealership to have whatever was wrong repaired. After a mechanic checked it out, it was determined the computer needed to be replaced and they had to order the part. This is not an item that is normally serviced and I have no clue if the dealership checks it during a servicing of the car. So I wondered if there was a recall on it. In checking on this website I find I am not the only person who has had this problem and that I thought there would be a recall on it. When I picked up my car I asked about the recall and I was given paperwork stating it was a "warranty enhancement program" for "9 years with no mileage limitation from the date of first use or before September 30, 2013". Letters were sent out to Prius owners of cars from 2004 to certain 2009 models. I never received a letter and am very concerned if Toyota knew there was a problem why didn't they not do just a "warranty enhancement program" but a recall? they would that eventually all cars would have this problem and it should be replaced. This is an extreme safety issue!.
The contact owns a 2005 Toyota Prius. He states that while driving every warning light in the vehicle began to flash, then the car died. He turned the vehicle on again and it done the same thing. After this the vehicle would not start. He called Toyota ,they sent someone with gas because the add fuel light was flashing, and they put gas in the vehicle. It still would not start. Towed to Toyota dealership, they looked at the car and could not get it to start. Someone kept pressing buttons and got the car to start, then, it started every time. The next time while driving with a full tank of gas it went from three quarters tank to gas down to empty instantly. He immediately pulled into a gas station to get gas and the maintenance light was flashing. He called Toyota back, and they would tow him to the nearest Toyota dealership. Instead he drove the vehicle home. Dealership said they did checked the fuel lines and it should be fine. Toyota denied all problems with the cars, the individual who towed consumer's vehicle told him that they had several people with this same problem. He decided to trade in the vehicle because he did not feel safe. It had several electrical problems such as, high beams came on by themselves, and door locks would not open occasionally. These incidents occurred on may 1, 2005 ,and he traded the vehicle in on may 16, 2005 . It was in the shop three times.
Headlight failure. . . . . While driving. I start out with my lights on, and randomly driving down the road one headlight, or the other, will go out, or both will go out. I replaced the bulbs, have had mechanics go over the car. . . . . . Before I joined a Prius chat and learned this is a "known issue". . . . . But still no recall? I've been pulled over by various law enforcement 4 times in the last 4 months! . . . . . . . . . . Below it asks for a date on the incident. . . It happens frequently. It's been happening for at least a year.
Headlights come on intermittently. Usually they work fine, but every so often since my friend first told me my lights were out last week, they don't turn on whether the car is running or not. It can happen to one or both lights at a time, and is unpredictable, making me afraid to drive at night. I took it to the mechanic's today, but the lights were working and he couldn't determine the problem. The bulbs are fine, as long as they are able to turn on, and the mechanic agreed the bulbs do not need replacement.
Headlights go out while driving, it takes turning them on and off a few times to turn them back on. It is random, sometimes passenger side, sometimes drivers side, sometimes both. Toyota settled a class action lawsuit with 2006 - 2009 Prius, mine is 2005, but this is a safety issue and is extremely dangerous. When both headlights go out, it may take several tries to get them to come back on, leaving me without headlights as I'm driving my kids to school early in the morning in the dark, going 65mph down the highway. Currently saving to get fixed(car was a gift). I called Toyota for an estimate on this known problem and they said they I would have to bring it in and they would charge me $85 for them to diagnosis the problem. Toyota is not taking any responsibility for this problem, which clearly they are aware of and somehow skirted out of a recall or any liability for all models.
